Lifetime Sports is a wonderful program Barstow offers for kindergarteners and up. Once per week in January and February, students at Barstow spend an afternoon exploring a seasonal activity.  We asked Mr. Cook some questions about Lifetime Sports:

When did it start?- “Lifetime Sports started at Barstow in 1988.”

Why is it important?-“Kid’s need to grow up doing an activity that they will do for the rest of their lives.”

Why do we do lifetime sports?-“To expose kids to outdoor activities.”

Everyone who is in Lifetime Sports gets to skip a half day of school and do one of the fun activities. This winter, activities included bowling, rock climbing, skating, and skiing/snowboarding.  The school provides transportation by bus for each group. People who ski or snowboard have the option to stay at Pico until 4 when a second bus comes to pick them up.  If you are a beginner skier or snowboarder you can also do the Pico Junior Explorer program.  Skaters, bowlers, and rock climbers are brought to their destinations on the same bus and they are picked up with the same bus at 2:15. The middle school kids are allowed to pick two activities that they do for three weeks each while the K-4 kids all go to the same location as a group, but get to experience all of the activities.  Says, 8th grader Daniel Stephenson, "My favorite thing about Lifetime Sports is getting out of school to go skiing.  You don't get to do that very often!"
