I write to update you on the threat at Lothrop School that occurred yesterday morning and to provide more information, as I have now been given permission to do so.
Around 9 am yesterday morning, Lothrop School was informed that an individual had entered a facility in Rutland on June 8 and made several concerning statements, appearing to be experiencing a mental health crisis. The individual left the facility. As the police investigated the complaint about this individual, they learned that some of the comments made referred to the school shooting in Texas and the desire of the individual to carry out a similar event.
While Lothrop School was not specifically notified, it was known that this individual had ties to the Pittsford area. Therefore, we made a joint decision with the police to proactively initiate our safety protocols and respond by securing the building. The school doors were locked and students and staff stayed inside, while learning continued normally within the building.
We also consulted with Brandon Police and did not see a need for a similar lockdown at our Brandon and Leicester schools, as the individual was local only to Pittsford. However, the police were ready to assist if anything changed.
Shortly after 11 am, we learned the individual was found and in custody. The individual was subsequently transported to the hospital for medical treatment.under a mental health warrant. Schools are again open today and we will continue to be in communication with the authorities. We appreciate the patience of families and staff as we could not release full information yesterday as we implemented our safety protocols.
